May Net Worth & Spending: +$19,157

These past few months have gone by so quickly and we’re already nearly halfway through the year. It’s been a great year for adventure and there’s nothing quite like the excitement of starting all over again from scratch.

This May was filled with travel: flying back home for a surprise visit and having friends visit me here in Melbourne. I caught up with old friends and new friends over dinner and went on a ‘treat yo’self’ spending spree to survive the Melbourne cold fronts and look stylish at it. It was definitely a spendy month and I’m starting to get anxious about my savings rate dropping lower and lower since moving city and going out all the time.

What is the breakdown of my net worth?

Since switching my super to a different fund, I’ve noticed that the fund fees have dropped significantly and I’m seeing a more noticeable jump in balance in the past couple of months. This has been one of the best financial decisions I’ve made this year after discovering my super balance had been either negative or breakeven for the past few years.

My 6 month emergency fund has been fully funded since April and will stay untouched. I’d like to increase this to $20,000 however it’s not quite a priority for this year.

All my shopping in May saw my Shopping Sinking Fund be depleted and my goal is to boost this up in the next few months to cover some more items on my shopping wish list.

How much did I spend this month?

My spending this month was well out of control this month and the usual culprit is dining out and shopping. With friends visiting in the month, it was a very indulgent and incredible fun! However, going forward, I need to start saving up for these big weekends or events instead of putting it all on the credit card and then taking it out of savings later on – another reason why my net worth has barely increased since January.

What are my goals for June?

My goals are to sell my silver bullion and put into shares instead as I can get reap the benefits of passive income through dividends rolling in quarterly. My goal for June is to reduce my Food & Drinking spending down to $600 and shopping down to $200 for the month.

What do you think I can do to reduce my spending and reach these June goals? How did your month of May go?

I stumbled across your blog on a search for minimalism tips and basically binge read the lot in two nights. Love your honest approach money. Your net worth series was eye opening, it actually made me rethink my whole approach to our finances and my husband is on board too. Thanks!
